INSTALLATION PAGE 3 - ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A TYPICAL FITTING PROCEDURE

(please be patient there are numerous images on this page - so it may take a few minutes to load)

The following is a photographic record of a typical installation - the machine here is a Harley Davidson Night Train (Evo Engine) which belongs to Mark Topham

Our

gallery pages also show numerous other machines fitted with the system.

Every installation has to be approached as a completely different exercise, however there are certain guidelines which must be observed if the unit is to operate effectively.

Left: The Harley Night Train shown here has an Evo engine and also a rather tasty looking 'Primo' primary drive belt and cover. There are two options for mounting the Kliktronic unit, firstly you can connect to the existing foot pedal by making a clamp to secure the actuator to the front frame downtube. In this instance however the owner did not need to use the foot controls at all, so it was decided to remove the linkage altogether and adopt a different strategy.

Below: There is a stud which runs through the base of the cylinders, this offers a convenient mounting point for our swivel bracket. By slackening off the nuts on either end of the stud it was possible to feed through enough thread to accommodate the mounting bracket.

Left: Having mounted the bracket to the engine as described, the connecting rod then had to be connected to the selector lever. In this instance the existing lever only gave 3/4" of travel, since the Kliktronic requires 1" of travel for optimum performance then an extension piece was required for the lever.

Below: The extension was fabricated out of a piece of plate, two shoulders were welded on so that it made a snug fit onto the lever.

Left & Below: Once the extension was checked and the unit tested, the metal was shaped and polished to blend in with the rest of the machine.

Note: Some shimming was required to ensure that the connecting rod ran perfectly in line the the throw of the lever

Below Left: The finished installation, it was decided to make the unit waterproof in this case, since the actuator was lying horizontal with the risk of water ingress along the connecting rod. The gaiter is readily available from all Harley dealers - if you haven't already recognised it , it is a standard Harley clutch cable gaiter. All our actuators have a flange on the end designed to accept this, simply cut the gaiter down to 8 convolutions and push over the flange, cable tying the other end to the shoulder of the ball joint or clevis.

Above Right: The push button switch assembly used on this machine was a new design which takes up a very narrow space on the bars - particularly useful where the grips are either heated or have a metal sleeve which prevents them being cut down or where the original switch cluster is pinned to the bars

Left: If you have a Twin Cam 88 engine, then you can do a similar installation. The main difference is that the lever coming up from the gearbox is set back considerably more than the evo engine. As you can see it was necessary to not only extend the lever lengthways but also laterally to align with the actuator.
